Tips from Claudio Contrasti
The perfect wet shave at home
Tips from Claudio Contrasti, on trend men’s session stylist & grooming supremo
“90% of men shave at least once a day and shaving facial hair can cause skin irritations and injuries including in-grown hairs, razor burn and bumps. It is essential to get your shaving routine correct to reduce these risks and to stop you looking like you have massacred you face before a day in the office or an important night out. Follow my step by step guide and above all, take your time when shaving.” Claudio Contrasti.
1. Examine your face closely to determine the direction of the hair growth.
2. Cleanse. The purpose of cleansing is to strip the skin of infectious bacteria and dead skin cells. You could also try using a deep exfoliating cleanser like the Flint Edge Exfoliating Face Scrub twice a week to really clean out those pores.
3. Preferably, always shave after a hot shower. The hot water opens the pores and lubricates the skin.
4. Use a pre-shave oil. This will help to give the skin an extra barrier and cut down on the irritation and discomfort associated with shaving. The more you prepare your skin the better the results.
5. Always use a good quality shave cream. Personally I like to use the Flint Edge Shaving Cream which isn’t too thick and lathers up really well. You want to find a product that gives the richest moisturising lather possible. The richer the lather, the more protected your skin will be against razor bumps and razor burn.
I would also recommend using a brush to generate a lather, lifting the beard off the face and mildly exfoliating the skin. I would not recommend shaving foams and shaving gels for black skin because they do not give adequate protection from the sharpness of the blade.
6. When using the razor do not apply too much pressure it will irritate the skin by removing too many surface cells. Shave in the direction of growth. If you want a closer shave or the beard is too thick you will need a second stroke. You should re-lather and then shave either against or across the grain.
7. Thoroughly rinse your face with cold water to tighten the pores and refresh the skin.
8. Apply a non- alcoholic after-shave balm to nourish and soothe the skin. This maintains a healthy protective layer that promotes cell renewal. You could try the Flint Edge After Shave Balm which contains active ingredients like allantoin, witch hazel and calendula to compensate for the abrasive actions of the shaving blade.
