As all men know, there is a technique to the daily ritual of shaving so, sharpen your tools and follow these tips to give yourself the ‘Great Shave’ you’re after! 1. Shave after a shower, bath or after you have wet your facial hair for at least 5 minutes. This enables the hair to absorb water, making it softer and easier to cut. Remember that heat relaxes the face muscles giving an easier and more comfortable shave, so if you can, try shaving in the shower or bath. 2. Use a face scrub before you shave to help open up the pores, soften the hair and help free ingrown hairs, to give you a closer shave. 3. Apply a shaving cream with either a brush or massaging in with your fingers. Apply the brush in circular motions and work the cream into a lather or massage with finger tips, also working into a lather. (Which do I use? see frequently asked questions). 4. Use a new, sharp and warm blade and hold your razor gently. Shave the hair in the direction of hair growth (‘with the grain’), using light and even downward strokes. If you want a really close shave, first shave downwards, re-apply shaving cream and then shave upwards (‘against the grain’) to give you that fantastically smooth and close shave. 5. Rinse the blade regularly and don’t press too hard against the skin. 6. After shaving, wash your face with warm water and pat dry. 7. Apply an after shave balm to leave your skin feeling soft, smooth and moisturised. It also helps to relieve any discomfort after shaving. If you do suffer from skin irritation or razor burn, allow the area to repair fully before shaving again. That’s all there is to it. You are now armed with the tools for the Great Shave!
